St Jacobs & and McMichael Art Gallery - April 30th & May 1st 2011

Saturday 30th April
Emma and I drove to the town of St Jacobs, about 2 hours south west of Aurora to go to the farmers markets. The Canadian country side is just stunning, we had a gorgeous day and even though we got a little lost the drive was beautiful.  We stopped along the way at the town of West Montrose to see the last remaining covered bridge in Ontario.
Mennonites (like Amish) are part of the St Jacobs community and it was fascinating to see them driving horse and buggys and selling maple products on the side of the road as we got closer to town.
The markets were fantastic, fresh food (I just had to buy a home made blueberry pie and some maple fudge), crafts, flowers even dairy cattle! We easily spent a couple of hours wandering around the markets before driving into the town of St Jacobs itself where we learned about the Mennonite community in the museum and shopped along the main street.

Heading back home in the afternoon we were able to stop at other quaint little towns to shop and wander along the main streets.

Sunday 1st May
The McMichael Canadian Art Gallery in Kleinburg displays the work of the 'Group of 7' artists, famous for capturing the Canadian landscape.  Their artwork is amazing and I think I can appreciate it more having been to and seen that this is what Canada looks like!
