The Martimes 21st - 30th August

After saying goodbye to Mum and Dad I flew out East to join a tour of 'The Martimes' - beautiful Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.  Canada is an incredibly amazing and varied country, the east proving yet again just how spectacular it really is.  I joined the tour in Halifax, we then headed through the lush rolling green farm hills to New Brunswick. Here the tides of the Bay of Fundy are the highest in the world. We were able to see the tides in action at Hopewell Rocks, amazing flowerpot formations caused by erosion rising from the ocean floor. When the tides are out you are able to walk on the ocean floor! Leaving New Brunswick we headed across the worlds longest continuous multi-span bridge (12.9km long) to get to the home of Anne of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island. Have I used the words beautiful and amazing too much already .... spectacular ...!  It was wonderful driving across the island looking out at lush green farms and ocean on both sides!! We spent an afternoon at Cavendish beach in PEI national park and you couldn't visit PEI without going to Green Gables!  Is this where I admit to actually not caring for the movie :-Z sorry but the stage production in Charlotte town was really very good!  (maybe because it didn't go on forever like the movie :-) Once back in Nova Scotia we went to Cape Breton Island drove the incredible Cabot Trail, a coastal drive through the Cape Breton Highlands, nothing I say here could describe how spectacular the scenery is .. I will have to let the few pics show you.

At the end of the tour I had a couple of days in Halifax. I hired a car and drove along the coastal lighthouse route - the coast lines are just amazing ... have I said that? driving down to Lunenburg, a UNESO world heritage site. A fishing village with brightly painted old buildings, really pretty.  I had another day wandering around and exploring Halifax.  Along the drive I also stopped off at the beautiful Peggy's Cove lighthouse.

The one thing about this part of Canada was its music, the live music at the pubs and local jam sessions called 'Ceilidh' - very celtic music origins. Nights spent at the pub dancing and singing meant needing to sleep in the next morning! Such fun.
