Ports of call - Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Juneau & Skagway 10th - 13th July 2011

We had several ports of call on our way up to Seward.  At each port we were able to get out and explore for the day, even participate in prearranged activities.

Our first port of call was Ketchikan, a fishing town that obviously also survives on the flood of cruising tourists each summer - I have never seen so many jewelry stores in one place!

The only hill in the world you can go over,
through and around!

Wow

Another wonderful day comes
to an end!

The next port of call was Icy Strait Point, which has to be one of the best places in the world.  It is only a small place with no dock for the ship, to get ashore we had to get the small tender.  Such a beautiful spot, again all I can do is let the photos show how amazing this place was!

Our first real glimpse of snow

Amazing sunstars!
They just keep growing legs.

Our next port of call was Juneau, another very tourist driven town full of so many jewelry stores and with four cruise ships in port plenty of tourists buying up the jems!

I went for a morning walk through town and to get away from all the tourists I thought I'd try out one of the local hiking trails .... until I became scared of running into a bear (they have both grizzly and black bears in Alaska!), I had to stop to ask a local about the bears and was told there are lots of them and I'd probably see a few and as long as I make a lot of noise going around corners I should be fine! Not feeling like being mauled so early on in the summer I headed back into town :-)

In the afternoon I went on a whale watching tour - and WOW!  I am going to create another blog page just for that as it was so special and just spectacular.

I also got to get up close to Mendenhall Glacier just outside of Juneau - you could have stood there and watched it forever, amazing!  To end another perfect day I went up the Mount Roberts Tramway for amazing views over Juneau.

It was nice to get out of town ...

One of many :-)
Another perfect day comes to an end!

Our last port of call was Skagway - The gateway to the Klondike, site of the Goldrush in 1898.  I caught the White Pass and Yukon Railway across the border back into Yukon Territory Canada, following the original goldrush trail through the spectacular mountains.  Once at the top of the world :-)  I biked it back down to Skagway - wow what an absolute rush and beautiful scenery!

Breathtaking scenery!

On top of the world!
