The Rockies 26th - 30th July 2011

Our final west coast adventures saw us travel through the Rockies on the famous 'Rocky Mountaineer' to Jasper then board a coach to travel through Lake Louise and Banff.  The Rockies are just stunning, staring out at the beautiful mountains certainly never became dull.

The first leg of our journey took us from Vancouver to Kamloops!

Heading into the Rockies

Looking out the window!

Somewhere in BC!

Watch out for landslides!

Amazing land formations

Train surfing :-) (through the window)

Stunning

Kamloops - just before a massive storm hit
and flooded parts of the town!

From Kamloops we headed to Jasper! Unfortunately we arrived in Jasper late and didn't get a chance to take a look around town.  I was then determined to get up early and go for a walk around the lake at the hotel to see the mountains surrounding Jasper, and I certainly wasn't disappointed - wow!

Onward to Jasper!

Watching where we have been

Just some of the sights along the way

Such different scenery around every bend

First signs of snow!

Arriving in Jasper.

After a tough day, having to stay here!

These are the amazing photos from my morning walk in Jasper!  It is hard to think, but it was actually so much more beautiful really being there :-)

Early morning Jasper

Amazingly clear and turquoise water

Wow!

It is like the water isn't there

I just couldn't stop taking photos!

From Jasper we headed towards Banff.  We stopped off at and were able to walk on Athabasca Glacier, which is part of the incredible Columbia Icefield, so very cold but incredible!  We saw the amazing turquoise lakes,  Peyto and Louise, and we never got sick of the mountains.

Stopping off at a waterfall on the way to Lake Louise

Our first sight of the Columbia Ice Field

Check out all the snow, and glacier!

Heading onto the glacier

The only way to travel on a glacier

We are headed down there!

The Rockies

I could have sat there and looked at
this all day

The sun shining though

The rain heading towards Banff

The Rockies were just spectacular!  Amazing scenery everywhere you went and turned. I am certainly looking forward to getting back here in January, hopefully there will be a bit more snow so I can go skiing :-)

Vancouver, Whistler & Vancouver Island 6th & 7th July, 21st - 25th July, 31st July - 2nd August 2011

We had a few days in wonderful Vancouver both before and after the cruise.  Vancouver is now one of my favourite cities. Such a lively and beautiful city that is easy to walk around, with so many interesting things to do and see.  I had a great day exploring Stanley Park both walking through and cycling around the sea wall.  Granville Island is a funky little market and artisan island that was great for lunch and to wander around.  We also headed up Grouse Mountain for what are meant to be spectacular views of the city .... only on non foggy days :-)  While the Capilano Suspension Bridge and skywalk were a cool attraction in North Vancouver.  I could easily live here!

Sky walk - so cool!

While in Vancouver we also had a day trip to Whistler on the Rocky Mountaineer. The Rockies are just spectacular! Whistler even in summer, with the hiking, mountain biking and swimming is just bustling.  A float plane flight over the Whistler mountains was an amazing way to see how massive and beautiful the rockies are.

It is a wonder anyone goes hiking with
signs like these around

At the end of our West Coast visit we had three wonderful days on Vancouver Island.  Staying at the very posh and fancy Empress Hotel was indeed quite the experience!  Victoria, the capital of BC was also a wonderful city to wander and explore.  Splash Symphony was on while we were there, a barge in the harbour with bands and a symphony orchestra playing all afternoon!  A lovely, lazy way to spend an afternoon in Victoria, especially after a delicious High Tea at the Empress Hotel!

On Vancouver Island I took a day sea kayaking trip through the gulf islands - wow!  Although I was completely exhausted and aching after 7 hours of paddling, the sea life and scenery certainly made it worth while.

Just out for a paddle

Very curious seals

Stopping for lunch

The Gulf Islands - spectacular!

What an incredible day!

A very sore and tired me :-)

Our final day on Vancouver Island we went out to the amazing Buchart Gardens. I now have over 200 photos of flowers!  The gardens were just incredible to walk around, so beautiful and peaceful!
